FAAN Awards School Nurse Scholarships

Scholarships Send 16 School Nurses to the
National Association of School Nurses Annual Conference

FAIRFAX, Va. (August 12, 2008) – The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN) is pleased to announce that 16 school nurses from around the country received scholarships to attend the annual conference of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) held in Albuquerque, N.M., June 28 to July 1, 2008.

“School nurses are uniquely prepared to care for students with food allergies,” said Amy Garcia, R.N., M.S.N., executive director of NASN. “We applaud FAAN’s effort to provide an opportunity for school nurses to receive education that will keep children safe in school.”

“Receiving the scholarship from FAAN not only allowed me to take an educational trip, but it also served as recognition of the work I truly love,” said Patty Antle, R.N., B.S.N., an elementary school nurse in Carmel, Ind. “Being there inspired me to want to learn more, to become involved at the state and national level, and to be the best school nurse I can be for those I serve.”

The 2008 scholarship winners were Karen Snyder and Patty Antle of Indianapolis, Ind.; Christy Johnson, Susan Han, Marie Ospeck, and Jodi Lozan of San Francisco, Calif.; Lisa Ehrlichman, Kathleen Burke, and Rosemary Jaworski of San Diego, Calif.; Sharon Grimes and Beth Tush of Baltimore, Md.; Deborah West of Tempe, Ariz.; Elizabeth Angenend and Desiree Hearn of Houston, Texas; and Catherine Schaukowitch and Rachel Knee of Shawnee Mission, Kan.

“School nurses are vital to keeping children with food allergies safe at school,” said Anne Muñoz-Furlong, Founder and CEO of FAAN. “This new program is a win-win – it will help nurses and children.”

The School Nurse Scholarship Program is part of FAAN’s Walk for Food Allergy Community Outreach Grant Program. These grants support the communities where Walk for Food Allergy events take place.
